Plan your setup
Choose the places that matter
Start under sinks, beside the washing machine, near the water heater and in known problem areas. Check whether the device detects water at its contacts or along a sensing cable. Place the sensor where a small leak will reach it, and keep it accessible for testing and battery replacement.
Hub and notification requirements
Aqara’s documented Water Leak Sensor uses Zigbee and requires a compatible Aqara hub. A Matter-capable hub does not turn the sensor itself into a Thread device. Confirm whether the leak state appears in your chosen controller and whether remote notifications need a cloud account or subscription. Test the alert with your phone locked and away from Wi-Fi.
Detection is not shutoff
A sensor alone does not close a valve. A supported valve actuator, compatible plumbing and a working automation are separate parts of the system. Use professional installation where needed, check manual operation and ensure closing the valve does not create another hazard. A garden watering controller is not automatically a whole-home shutoff device.
Make the routine maintainable
Test with the manufacturer’s approved method, dry the sensor and confirm it clears. Label batteries and test intervals. Plan for a hub or internet outage and decide who will act on an alert while you are away. An automatic rule should report what it did and leave a practical manual recovery method.
