Plan your setup
Check the system first
Use the manufacturer’s exact compatibility checker for heat-pump stages, auxiliary heat, conventional systems and accessories. Photograph the old labels before disconnecting anything. A line-voltage heater and a low-voltage central HVAC system need different controls. Follow the product’s power/C-wire instructions; a similar-looking thermostat is not proof of compatibility.
Sensors and schedules
A room sensor can inform temperature and occupancy decisions; it cannot know with certainty that everyone has left. Decide which rooms matter at sleep and work times. Compare the comfort sensors included in the exact package and whether advanced features need a paid service. Review a week of operation before making automatic changes.
Old Nest models need careful identification
Google ended app support for first- and second-generation Learning Thermostats in October 2025. The notice does not automatically apply to Thermostat E or third-generation Learning Thermostat. Works with Nest ended separately in 2023. Do not assume all generations support Matter or all older integrations remain usable.
Compare ongoing costs
Current ecobee documentation and its installation guides are useful starting points for compatibility. Manufacturer savings percentages are not a prediction for your house. Track runtime, comfort and billing context across comparable weather, and avoid aggressive automation that bypasses system protection or leaves occupants uncomfortable.
